Biography

For me the act of illustrating is a scrapbook of thoughts and feelings. Within this world of notebooks and images the real and imaginary cross boundaries with freedom and inventiveness.

My great passion is working with collage. I enjoy structuring pieces together; creating an image that combines different methods. My work often integrates photography, printmaking, painting and drawing composed between layers.

I work instinctively, deconstructing and reconstructing the images, reworking and collaging until I feel happy with the aesthetics. Reoccurring visual patterns consist of vivid colours, repetition and abstract form.

I never plan an image and prefer to work on the spot, reacting to the materials and space. Contrary to my education I often think the unfinished pieces and sketchbook work is more interesting than a final product.

This work in particular explores the subject of the Uncanny. The Uncanny is a Freudian concept of an instance where something can be familiar, yet foreign at the same time, resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange. I look further into the state of the unconscious tapping into the way in which we perceive and interpret.

This stems from the necessity to remain childlike. By merging objects from the physical world, with the strange, often disjointed imaginary the image becomes dreamlike yet unknowingly familiar. My images act as short hallucinations, which although are decorative, yet invite an alarming uneasiness.
